The Zentrum für Angewandte Luftfahrtforschung (centre for applied aeronautical research) in Hamburg is the third-largest institute of its kind in the world. Here, research and know-how from science and economics are bundled centrally. To steadily advance synergies, the technology centre encompassing varied research infrastructure and measuring roughly 26,000 m² is due for continuous expansion. Its focus is on integration and industrialisation of innovative aeronautical technologies and joint use of the infrastructure by different partners. For these purposes, the ZAL offers, among other things, an extensive VR laboratory.
Power wall including conference room
The central element of the VR area is our 4K 3D power wall with an adjacent conference room, where up to 32 people can experience complex projects from aeronautics and astronautics in 3D. We would like to say thank you for the commissioning of planning and installation.

Power wall details
- Viscon rear projection pane: 6 m x 3.18 m
- Projector: Christie Mirage 304K, native 4K resolution, active stereo, 120 Hz image repeat rate, 30,000 ANSI lumens, modular lamp system
The size and quality of the projection pane combined with the high-resolution and high-brightness Christie projector facilitates precise display even of large objects in original dimensions as well as zooming in on the smallest details and modifying them.
3D projection and active shutter system
One main agent can interact with the projected 3D objects via a tracking system, while the other participants can follow events through active shutter glasses. The installation overall is conceived as a cluster system with shared storage, server connection via LWL switch and data distribution over two clients (60 images per second for left and right eye each).
- Data calculation and distribution: TechViz software
- Graphics display: among others AMD Catalyst software
VR laboratory for diverse collaborations
The VR laboratory with our power wall at the centre offers internal ZAL researchers as well as interested external parties of various trades great opportunities for collaboration on the basis of new, innovative technologies and with optimised results in a shorter time than before.
